What is an occupational risk assessment?
A Risk assessment is a careful examination of what, in work activities, could cause harm to people and what is the likelihood of an accident happening. By carrying out a risk assessment, you can evaluate whether sufficient precautions have been taken or if more needs to be done to prevent harm. The aim is to make sure that no one gets hurt or becomes ill.
Occupational risk can be assessed in the following five steps:
- Step 1 - Identify the hazards
- Step 2 - Decide who might be harmed and how
- Step 3 - Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
- Step 4 - Record your findings and implement them
- Step 5 - Review your assessment and update if necessary
