First Aid at Work – Level 3

Course Objectives

This course is designed to help businesses and individuals learn basic first aid skills so that they can recognise emergency situations, treat minor conditions and ensure appropriate action can be taken at the time of an incident. Successfully completing the course will qualify candidates to become first-aiders in their workplace.

Topics covered

The Highfield Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work is a two-part course.

Part 1 covers:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Assessing an incident
  • Unconscious casualties
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Choking
  • External bleeding
  • Shock
  • Minor injuries

Part 2 covers:

  • Secondary survey
  • Injuries to bones, joints, and muscles
  • Suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Chest injuries
  • Burns and scalds
  • Eye injuries
  • Sudden poisoning
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Major illness

Course structure

The course includes lectures enhanced by audio/visual material and practical teaching aids. Instructors use continuous assessment throughout the course to evaluate candidates.


3 days


The course concludes with a multiple choice exam. Successful candidates receive a certificate from Highfield Qualifications and a wallet-sized ID card, stating that they are a qualified first aider.
