The Athenaeum Hotel, a luxurious 5-star independent establishment located in Mayfair, prides itself on delivering an exceptional guest experience with its high standards of service. However, operating within the premium hotel sector requires meticulous attention to detail in food safety and Health & Safety compliance.

When Joanne Taylor-Stagg took up the mantle as General Manager, Food Alert was already in place, supporting The Athenaeum. We recently met up with Joanne to hear her story and learn more about how Food Alert continues to play a pivotal role in keeping The Athenaeum operating at the highest level of safety and efficiency.

The difference Food Alert makes

To The Athenaeum, Food Alert isn’t just some short-term compliance tool: it’s a long-term solution to a continuous problem.

Joanne explained:

“As the leader of the business, it allows me to sleep easier at night knowing that stuff I physically can’t get around to and check all the time is getting done, and that there’s a process in the system.”

Whether it’s keeping up with changing legislation, preparing for EHO audits and inspections, or training new staff who aren’t familiar with UK food safety protocols and systems, Food Alert keeps The Athenaeum team ahead of the curve and up to date.

“We can go into an EHO inspection with a high degree of confidence in our processes and systems.

When it comes to food hygiene and safety, vigilance is key. And with Food Alert’s Alert65 feature, The Athenaeum can stay vigilant, both in terms of food, and general licensing – like a reminder to renew their terrace license.

When it comes to topics like Natasha’s Law, Joanne commented that Food Alert presents an ‘elegant’ solution.

Joanne added:

“It’s the testing of the small stuff – everyone’s trying to do the right thing. It’s the rigour. It’s the keeping up to date. It’s making sure you’ve got a safety net, and seeing things with a critical eye.”

Joanne recounted the time that one of the chefs ordered in a substitution of a product, as their original supplier was out of stock. However, they didn’t realise that the new product contained onions, as the labelling was incorrect. When Client Services Director John Haswell ran through their next audit, he helped flag up the potential issue and make sure everything was set back in order.

Upholding food Health & Safety standards one day at a time

When running a business as extravagant as The Athenaeum, having automations and systems in place to make sure all notifications and reminders are sent off on time is a huge help. As Joanne put it, whilst Food Alert doesn’t necessarily help grow The Athenaeum, it certainly ‘prevents losses’ and helps the team sleep well at night, confident in their ability to provide truly exceptional service.
